Root Canals
Save your natural tooth and relieve pain.
Preserving Your Natural Tooth
If you’re experiencing persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling around the gums, you may need root canal therapy. Tooth infections typically result from deep decay, trauma, or cracks in the enamel, allowing bacteria to reach the inner pulp. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause severe discomfort and lead to further complications if left untreated.
At Generations Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we perform root canals to remove infected pulp, relieve pain, and restore the tooth’s strength. The procedure helps preserve your natural tooth while preventing the infection from spreading to other areas of the mouth.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Determining whether a root canal is necessary can be challenging, but certain symptoms often indicate an infection that requires treatment. These signs include:
- Persistent tooth pain that does not improve with over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks that lingers even after the source is removed.
- Swollen or tender gums, often accompanied by pain when touching the affected tooth.
- Discoloration of the tooth, which may appear gray or black.
- A loose-feeling tooth due to infection weakening its supporting structure.
- Chips or cracks in the tooth that allow bacteria to enter and infect the pulp.
Having one or more of these symptoms does not always mean you need a root canal, but if multiple symptoms persist, it is important to seek professional evaluation.
What to Expect During a Root Canal
To ensure your comfort, local anesthesia is administered to numb the affected tooth. Dr. David Goldschein will then place a dental dam to keep the tooth dry before creating a small opening to remove the infected pulp. The root canal chamber is carefully cleaned, disinfected, and filled with a special medicated material to prevent reinfection. Finally, the tooth is sealed and often restored with a custom dental crown to enhance strength and longevity.
A root canal provides a long-term solution, allowing you to preserve your natural tooth while restoring comfort and function.
