Frenectomy

Gentle treatment for tongue-tie and lip-tie.

Understanding Tongue-Tie and Lip-Tie

A tongue-tie is a condition that restricts movement of the tongue due to a short or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) under the tongue. This can limit your child’s ability to eat, speak, and swallow properly. Similarly, a lip-tie occurs when the upper lip is too tightly connected to the gums, preventing normal movement and possibly interfering with feeding and speech development. If left untreated, lip-ties can also affect tooth positioning and jaw development as your child grows.

Children with tongue-tie or lip-tie may experience difficulty nursing, eating, speaking, or sleeping. Infants often struggle with breastfeeding, leaking milk while feeding, choking, or showing signs of gas and colic. As they grow, these issues may continue, leading to slow eating, trouble sleeping, and even nighttime teeth grinding.

Frenectomy: A Simple and Effective Treatment

If your child is experiencing symptoms of tongue-tie or lip-tie, a frenectomy may be recommended. Our team will examine your child’s mouth to determine the extent of the restriction. The procedure involves using a precise dental laser to release the tongue or lip, allowing for immediate improvement in movement. This modern approach is quick, minimally invasive, and can be performed without sedation.

Following the procedure, some children may require post-treatment exercises to strengthen and retrain the tongue for optimal function. With proper healing, most children experience improved feeding, speech clarity, and better sleep. A frenectomy can provide long-term benefits, ensuring that your child’s oral development progresses smoothly.
