Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday of many people, but if you’re not careful, the huge amount of food you eat during the big meal can actually have a negative effect on your teeth – even going so far as to cause cavities.

Obviously, this isn’t the type of holiday surprise you want. So to help you avoid cavities, this holiday season – and especially during Thanksgiving – take a look at the following tips.

Floss after the big meal

It’s easy to take a nap after eating the turkey, but if you do that you risk letting any meat, or other food, remain stuck in between your teeth. This can cause cavities and other oral health problems. So before the nap, take a few minutes to floss and remove and residual bits of turkey from your teeth.

Avoid too much soda

Soda is a popular drink to have with the big meal, but drinking too much of it in one sitting can do a number on your tooth enamel. If you don’t brush after eating and drinking a ton of soda, you risk building up plaque on your teeth, which can lead to gingivitis. It’s important to make sure you take care of your teeth as soon as possible after the meal.
